Lets Talk Palm Oil

Morning all,

It’s time for another Friday #TrainingTips post and today we’re talking about Palm Oil.

Palm Oil has been the subject of much criticism of late with some very bold claims lat year that Nutella can cause cancer due to it’s high levels of refined Palm Oil.  Did you see those reports?  It was that bad that Nutella was even being removed from the shelves across Europe.  So lets first get this out of the way Nutella is ‘NOT’ going to cause yo to get cancer.

I found the report and study paper where all this started.  The report highlights a link between some compounds that are found in palm oil (glycidyl ester or GE, MCPD and MPCD) and how these compounds have been shown to be a genotoxin and for those that don’t know a genotoxin is something that can damage our DNA.  It’s this genotoxicity that has lead to an assumption that this can be a trigger for the formation of cancer cells.

It’s a pretty compelling read but one major factor that we must understand is that these laboratory tests were carried out on ‘rats’ not ‘humans’.  No human testing was carried out, now we and rats do share similarities in our metabolisms but and this is a big ‘BUT’ there some major differences also, so you can’t take lab rat test conclusions as complete concrete evidence.

Another thing that stood out was that it seemed that the genotoxicity of the palm oil was at it’s most when it had under gone refinement and/or had been subjected to high temperatures.  So as per usual, things that have been refined are being found not to be good for us ‘SHOCK’ not really is it.  And another non-shock is that over heating certain oils is not good for us (as far as I can find out Nutella is produced at low temperatures by the way).

What I didn’t know till researching into that palm oil paper and more into palm oil itself is that palm oil is the most commonly produced vegetable oil on the planet.  It’s found in food, cosmetics, detergents biofuels and even candles (who knew).  It turns out palm oil is used to such a degree that it is a major cause for deforestation.

What can we do?

  • Read the labels and buy food or products that don’t contain palm or at least refined palm oil.
  • Stay clear of proceeded food and cook it yourself from scratch.
  • Spread the word.

Just like anything consuming small amounts of things that aren’t good for us is not necessarily a good thing but at the same time when it’s small amounts I wouldn’t worry.  It’s when you are over consuming and you’re eating loads of processed foods and Nutella by the jar a day that you might be causing yourself some serious harm.

As always if you have any further questions just ask.

Have a great weekend guys.

Stay strong and live, love and laugh!

Dan
