Is Breakfast Important?

Morning all,

Did you all have breakfast this morning?

Well that’s what today’s #TrainingTips post is all about ‘BREAKFAST’.

Is breakfast important? And what’s the big deal if I skip it?

These are some of the questions I’m hoping to answer throughout today’s article, which by the end, I’m hoping you will have a little more clarity about breakfast.

Many people base breakfast on convenience, whereby if they get up in time for breakfast, it’s just grabbing something quick before shooting out of the door off to work.  The unfortunate reality is that more often than not, our breakfast choices are a matter of convenience too, which may not be the best thing for us nutritionally.  In some cases even to the point where skipping breakfast may be the better option.

Getting up just that extra 5-10 minutes earlier where you can prepare a more nutritional breakfast will pay you back in droves, trust me.

Lets say you start the day with a nutritional breakfast, you may just notice some of these benefits thought your day:

  • More energy
  • Improved mood
  • Better food choices later in the day
  • Balanced blood sugars
  • Improved bowel movements

Now lets say you have continued to have a nutritional breakfast every morning, you have been noticing the benefits above, this may also just lead on to the following benefits too:

  • Reduction in body fat
  • Improved learning and retention
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Muscle preservation
  • Increased strength

Just these short and long term benefits alone should make you think that taking the time to have a good nutritional breakfast could be worth the effort.

A common excuse for skipping breakfast is that you are just too busy.  Well if you’re too busy to eat a nutritional breakfast, then in reality you must be far to busy to be lean and healthy, it’s pretty simple really.

Some people intentionally skip breakfast with the intention of dropping down to that next waist size, but surprisingly those who do skip breakfast may actually be heading in the opposite direction.  Here’s a stat for you, if you skip breakfast you’re actually 5 times more likely to be obese than those who don’t.  How’s that work?

Breakfast is called the most important meal of the day because it’s your first opportunity everyday to get some high quality nutrition inside you.

If you have the time, prepare something, get it done.  But if you’re rushed then make yourself a smoothie and have it on the go.

How about trying some of these options:

  • My favourite good old porridge and why not add some vanilla protein, some frozen fruit and a sprinkling of nuts or flax mix on top.
  • Scrambled egg on wholemeal toast.
  • Homemade smoothie with fruit, oats, vanilla protein, kale and peanut butter.
  • Bagel with soft cheese and fresh salmon with a small salad.
  • Scrambled egg with a salad and a piece of fruit.
  • Omelette with side salad

These honestly take no more than 5 minutes to be on your plate, but if you don’t have the time to sit and eat it.  Then like I’ve already said a smoothie is the perfect answer.

It’s as easy as that.  If you’re one of those who do usually skip breakfast, take your time to build up a routine and try different things.  It will take time to build the habit of your breakfast routine but stick with it, it gets easier.

Here’s some other ideas to consider when putting together a nutritional breakfast:

  1. Take your time and prepare breakfast yourself, if limited by time have breakfast prepared ahead of time.
  2. Pace yourself when eating.
  3. Include some protein dense food.
  4. Eat enough food.
  5. Eat real and unprocessed food.
  6. Don’t be afraid of vegetables, or eating ‘dinner food’ for breakfast.
  7. Eat whole grains like oats, millet, quinoa, sprouted grains.
  8. Establish a routine that you can stick to.
 Simple’s right?

It really is that simple but what if skipping breakfast works for you, I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for years now so I’m not against skipping a few meals or going longer without eating if I don’t feel the need to.  This breakfast is the most important meal of the day may then not actually be as accurate as we all first thought.

The current supporting evidence is clear that after reanalysis of countless research studies, the conclusion that breakfast is the best way forward may not be completely true.  Yep, we’ve all been preaching the breakfast sermon for 20+ years and the links to breakfast being best for us turns out to be “only presumed true”.

What we do find now is that NO breakfast is not the most important meal of the day, but better food choices are made by those later in the day when they have started the day with a more nutritional breakfast.  I don’t personally think this has anything to do with the breakfast itself, more the fact that we have a great understanding of better food choices.

Have breakfast or don’t have breakfast it’s your choice, what the important thing is, is that all your food choices are good choices.  A bit of bad isn’t bad, just not all the time.

Have a great weekend guys and enjoy the Bank Holiday and get making breakfast, if you want that is.

Stay strong and live, love and laugh!

Dan
