Have You Heard Of Death Performance?

Morning all,

It’s time for a #TrainingTips post and today’s post is a little on the weird side but nevertheless still very interesting.

Death Performance

What?!?!  Yep death performance, bare with me.  I came across an interesting article last year about how death was being used as a performance enhancer.  Strange but weirdly true.

Here’s the low down, it’s called terror management theory and the article I read came from the Journal of Sports and Exercise Psychology.  So according to research when people are reminded of their inevitable death this has a direct link to increases in self-esteem.  Who knew!  In this particular study that was conducted on a basketball team during 2 games and a shooting challenge they saw individual performance increases of between 30% and 40% when compared to the control group.

One of the reasons why the people that were subjected to the death questionnaire had an increase in performance is that they took more shots than the control group.  The article doesn’t give any specifics on the success to failure rate of the extra shots taken, but if you’ve got more shots attempted the percentage of success has got to go up.  It’s almost as if each individual was making the most of every moment or opportunity they had.

Maybe we need to take a little bit of this into our training or the direction we are heading in life.  Add a little bit of dark motivation to give you that edge by making you push that will bit more.  It’s very weird thinking about it, but I get it.  Hey, we’re not here forever and what’s the worst that can happen.

I haven’t got any death questionnaires for you don’t worry, but I do think it’s not a bad thing being reminded of the inevitable if it ultimately is for the greater good.  Strange one this morning and I would love to know you thoughts.

Have a great weekend guys.

Stay strong and live, love and laugh!

Dan
